Generating Steam Heat radio show 13.06.17 (UK Punk EPs 1979-82 Special)

On this weeks show we were joined by our guest Andy Lord, aka DJ Nony Zero from Soundart Radio garage rock show 'An Infinate Number Of Monkeys' as we travelled back in time to take a look at some of the best British punk EPs released between 1979 and 1982, when bands raged against the system via independently released records commenting very loudly on the concerns of the day.

Dismissed out of hand by most of the UK music press of the time, the early 80s UK punk scene produced hundreds of slabs of vinyl that sold by the bucket load to like minded kids all over the country including Ed X, Gentleman Jimmy T and Andy. Despite receiving almost no mainstream coverage outside of Garry Bushell and John Peel, the punk scene of the time was hugely popular, operating on a grass roots level which rejected the major label approach of the first wave of punk.

Musically diverse, the scene produced some classic punk rock, oi! and early hardcore tunes while often opening young minds to political and social causes such as the peace and animal rights movements. The musical and DIY approach of these bands still has an influence on new bands all over the world.
